From previous knowledge about the origins of chocolate, I was aware the Mayans created the popular treat but what I found interesting was the process of it all. The Mayans combined cocoa, water and chilli into a mixture not too dissimilar from what we consume today. It originates from “xocolatl” which translates to bittersweet. With this in mind, I opted into designing a set of three spiced chocolates to pay homage to the creators of chocolate. These three spices are chilli, cardamom and turmeric.
The design follows the linear story depiction of the cultivating, bean extracting, roasting, emulsifying and mixing process. The geometric approach of the design aims to get a sense of the Mayan design culture without taking their distinctive designs directly. KOKOA chocolate is a set of three spiced chocolates, embellished with gold foil to attract the consumers’ attention and also has the accessibility where they can easily take out the chocolate as they please. Using dyed recycled paper, giving it a rustic look it makes the product more sustainable but cost effective as two chocolate templates can fit onto one A3 paper stock.
